Formula 1 is gearing up for this year’s Belgian Grand Prix, but before the start of the race, fans could witness a special press conference. In addition to F1 President Stefano Domenicali, Audi boss Markus Duesmann was also in the room. And it was he who came to announce that the German manufacturer would enter F1 as an engine supplier.

Audi won’t be involved in racing until the 2026 season, when new power unit regulations come into play.

Unlike Porsche, which has sided with Red Bull, Audi has not yet signed up any new teams and has announced that we will learn the name of the stable using their engines towards the end of this year.

“It’s a huge moment for our sport that underlines the great strength of (F1),” Domenicali said at a news conference. “Motorsport is a fundamental part of Audi’s DNA,” Duesmann added to the situation.

The carmaker is currently trying to find enough staff and facilities to fully develop the engine it has been working on testing for three years. In particular, the electric part of the engine is being developed and will play a major role in the new powertrain. Work is also under way on the battery.

Audi will build its main production facility in Neuburg, Germany. The head of the F1 project will be the experienced Adam Baker, who is facing the challenge of a lifetime. The question is which team Baker and the whole of Audi will be contracted to.

Depending on that, it may also put more pressure on the engine supplier. If Audi were to side with McLaren, for example, the demand for results would be high, but with Haas, for example, this pressure should not be too great.
