Champions League

A miracle? No, Bayern could have left Villarreal with one hell of a beating. Can he turn it around?

It was quite a shock for those unfamiliar with Spanish football. Villarreal defeated Bayern Munich 1-0 in the Champions League quarter-finals, but not by a miracle, as they could have scored many more goals. But those who follow the Yellow Submarine regularly were not surprised by its strength.

Getting Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the Champions League? You could hardly find a tougher opponent. But this Villarreal will not back down from anything. David took on Goliath with all the vigour and the roles of favourite and underdog were reversed from the start.

Villarreal can do it against strong teams. They knocked out Arsenal in the Europa League last year, they beat Manchester United in the final, they recently drew with both Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid in La Liga, and they knocked out Juventus in the Champions League eighth round. And now he’s taken on Bayern.

The Bavarians came to the city of 50,000 as big favourites. But they didn’t know what hell was about to break loose at the Estadio de la Cerámica. Villarreal didn’t let up and didn’t want to defend the draw. On the contrary, they were actively attacking from the start and Bayern couldn’t cope with a tenacious opponent.

In the 8th minute, Danjuma sent the home side into the lead, as he headed Pareja’s shot over. But that wasn’t all, in the 41st minute Coquelin scored a beautiful goal, but it was disallowed for offside. The Bayern players fell out of the role and “El submarino amarillo” sailed on.

In the second half, striker Gerard Moreno had three goals. First, his shot only ended up on the bar, and it only just deflected off the oncoming Coquelin. A few minutes later Villarreal made a quick break down the left side, Danjuma passed between the penalty spot and the small area to Moreno, only for his shot to be blocked by a sliding Davies.

In the 61st minute, the 29-year-old forward took advantage of a huge mistake by Neuer and fired into an empty net from the middle of the park, only to miss. 15 minutes into the second half, Moreno could have had a hat-trick.

In the 87th minute, Los Groguets scored again. Lo Celso led a great break, hooked Upamecano and crossed to Alfonso Pedraza in the box, but he missed a great chance.

The result, which looks like a sensation, is still merciful for Bayern. Villarreal could have easily scored 3-4 goals. However, if he plays as actively at the Allianz Arena, his chances at the post could be quite big.
