The idol of Czech and German fans is probably on his way out. The acquisition of new top striker Sardar Azmoun, who has signed for the Rhineland club until 2027, suggests so.
The Iranian international is currently at Zenit St Petersburg, where he is the number one player in his position. He managed to score 19 goals last season.
Azmoun is also on a roll with the national team, whose performances have taken them to their third World Cup in a row. At the last one, Iran finished just behind Portugal in the group.
Leverkusen will have Sardar Azmoun at their disposal when his current contract at Zenit St Petersburg expires. He will therefore leave for Germany for free in the summer.
“We are happy to have completed this transfer. Sardar Azmoun has been one of the top scorers in Russian football for several years. He won the championship title three years in a row with Zenit and has played regularly in the Champions League,” said Bayer 04 sporting director Simon Rolfes on the signing.
“Our attack will gain extra quality with him. Sardar will make our attack even more unpredictable and stronger,” added Simon Rofles.
“It’s incredibly exciting for me to be able to play in the Bundesliga soon. And I am convinced that I will improve the team even more with my football skills,” said Azmoun after the transfer.
The signing of the new top striker adds to the question about the departure of the Bundesliga’s second top scorer Patrik Schick.
