Jiří Veselý continues in great form this season. After the final in Dubai, where he defeated world number one Novak Djokovic, the Czech will now be one step away from the final in the well-attended clay tournament in Marbella, Spain.
When at the beginning of February he dropped out of the tournament in Pune, India, where he was defending important points in the ATP rankings, everyone wrote off Jiri Vesely. After a long time he ended up as the Czech number one in the rankings, moreover, even the performances with the Czech lion on his shirt did not match the fans’ expectations.
However, everything changed at the ATP tournament in Dubai, where the Czech representative caught his second bowl. He passed the qualification and in the main stage he defeated successively Marin Cilic, Robert Bautista, Denis Shapovalov and most importantly, for the second time in his career, the world number one Novak Djokovic.
In the final, he was outclassed by the Russian Andrey Rubljov, but Vesely made a good impression on everyone. Then the transition to European clay was not a good one for the 28-year-old Veselý, who fell in the first round to the 207th player in the world, Niko Serdarusic.
However, acclimatization to a different surface is a problem for most players and this is also true for the Czech player. At the next tournament in Marbella, Spain, Veselý won three matches in a row and his last victory over the 79th ranked player in the world, Robert Cerballes Baena, ensured his qualification to the semi-finals of this well attended tournament.
The first set offered a clear advantage for the native of Příbram, which was supported by two break points – 6::2. In the second set the game was a bit more even.
Veselý was able to rely on his serve throughout the match, which he did not lose even once, and thanks to a break point from the beginning of the second set he won this game as well – 6::4. In the semi-finals Jiří Veselý will play the winner of the quarter-final Jaume Munar.
