Normally, many spectators and fans are probably not attracted to traditional IOC sessions. Usually they are where we learn either the organizers of the Winter/Summer Olympics or what sports will be newly introduced at the biggest sporting festival on the planet.
However, the current session in Mumbai has surprised esports fans. IOC President Thomas Bach announced that the committee is drawing up plans to create an Olympic esport games.
“I have asked the new esports commission to conduct a study to create an Olympic esports games,” the IOC chief said during his speech. It is not yet clear what the scope will be and what will be played as esports. However, the mere consideration of implementing something like this is nothing new for the IOC.
A couple of years ago, the IOC announced that it was pursuing the development of esports and wanted to introduce esports in the future that most closely replicate an Olympic discipline or physical activity. One such esport is the well-known dance game Just Dance, which was presented at the recent Ubisoft conference under the “Olympic idea”.
In addition, the IOC already has some groundwork and parameters to work with. The recent Asian Games, where esport was presented for the second time in history, was quite a successful affair. However, the most popular game titles in Asia were mostly played here, including League of Legends, DotA and FIFA.
When we will see a regular world esport event for all the big esports is in the stars. However, we must not forget that once upon a time something like this did exist in the form of the World Cyber Games (WCG) at the beginning of the 21st century. But back then, the WCG ended due to funding and a decline in interest.
