The start of Sunday’s Formula 2 main race did not bring much excitement, quite the opposite. Even though the narrow city circuit in Monaco invites collisions, especially in the junior categories, the start was calm.
Everything dramatic started to happen after the first pit stops, when a virtual safety car was first declared on lap 19. Enzo Fittipaldi retired from the race.
Three laps later, however, there was a big drama in Monaco when Jack Doohan crashed in the passage outside the casino. His car caught fire and the race directors naturally resorted to red flags and a race suspension.
This was a crucial moment for Roman Stanek, who, along with the other drivers who had not yet stopped at their mechanics before the crash, drove to get fresh tyres. Thanks to this, he held on to his eighth place.
The race was then restarted, after which there was a 30-second gap between the eighth and ninth driver in the standings. Stanek could therefore drive without fear of falling down the order.
By the end of the race, the fans in Monaco and on the TV screens did not see any more overtaking. Only Victor Martins dropped to eighth place due to a penalty, with Stanek jumping to number seven.
The Czech driver of the Trident team lost just over twenty-seven seconds to the winner Vesti. Théo Pourchaire and third-placed Zane Maloney were also on the podium. Before Stanek, Richard Verschoor, Dennis Hauger and Kush Maini were also in higher positions.
Stanek thus recorded his best result in Formula 2 so far, taking six points for seventh place. The newcomer to this category is now seventeenth after six races with a total of seven points.
More importantly for him, however, Stanek is able to beat his teammate Clément Novalak on a fairly regular basis. He has only two points so far.
