A great comeback and a 19th Grand Slam title. Djokovic is the king of Rolland Garros!

The arrival of a new generation? Oh, no. It seemed that way for a long time. The old king, Novak Djokovic, returns to the clay throne. He didn’t have it easy in the final against Tsitsipas. The Greek took the opening two sets and looked set to break the dominance of Nadal and Djokovic. But then the Serbian great took the reins of the match and breathed a big sigh of relief, which he successfully accomplished in the end. After 4 hours and 12 minutes, Djokovic overpowered Tsitsipas 6-7 2-6 6-2 6-3 6-4 to win his 19th Grand Slam title.

The Serbian favourite started the expected final better. Tsitsipas entered the opening game quite nervously and offered his opponent several break points. The Greek managed to withstand these moments and hold his serve. After that, the players held their serve without any problems and everything was heading towards an interesting ending. The match was of a high standard. At 5-4, Djokovic was under pressure. He made several unnecessary errors and offered his opponent a set point. But the Serbian fought off the set point to level at 5-5.

Then Tsitsipas showed his weakness. Djokovic played a great game on the return, broke his opponent’s serve and served for the win. Surprisingly, he failed to do so and the tiebreak decided the fate of the first set. The shortened game was also full of twists and turns. The Greek took a quick 4-0 lead and had everything in his hands. But Djokovic fought back, winning four points in a row and even taking a set point. Tsitsipas turned that one away too with a great winner. The Greek won the following exchanges as well and eventually won the shortened game 8-6.

As the opening set ended, so began the next one. And once again, Tsitsipas won it. He quickly broke Djokovic early on and held on to that lead. He was outplaying his opponent and his lead was well deserved. He even managed to take one more serve from the Serb and took the second set 6-2. The 18-time Grand Slam champion was in a lot of trouble and things were looking very bad for the favourite.

But Djokovic certainly didn’t lay down his arms. He showed great fight and looked much more lively at 0:2. The third set was decided at 2-1 for Djokovic. The players were very competitive and it was a great spectacle. Djokovic won several break points, but Tsitsipas held on. But in the end, the Serb broke him and got an important break. A very crucial moment in the match. Djokovic managed to hold the break advantage until the very end and won the third set 6-3. So the drama was on.

Djokovic’s third set win was a huge boost. He excelled in the next set and outplayed his opponent. His improved play quickly gave him a 3-0 lead heading into the fifth set. Moreover, Tsitsipas saved himself and didn’t give as much as he could for the rest of the set. In the end, Djokovic dominated him 6-2 and it was the final set that determined the Rolland Garros winner.

The denouement of the match came fairly soon. Djokovic managed to break his opponent in the third game and gained a huge advantage. The nineteenth Grand Slam title was very close. Tsitsipas fought hard, held on tooth and nail, but it wasn’t enough. There was a lot of physical fatigue on him. He didn’t have the strength to turn it around. Djokovic never let go of his lead and brought the grand final to a victorious end. He defeated Tsitsipas 6-7 2-6 6-2 6-3 6-4 to win his 19th Grand Slam title.

He became the first tennis player in the Open era to win every Grand Slam at least twice. Neither Nadal nor Federer had managed to do that. He is only 1 title behind Federer and Nadal in the number of grand slams. The Swiss and the Spaniard have won 20. Djokovic has proved that at 34 years old he is still one of the best tennis players in the world. 19 Grand Slam titles for him may certainly not be the end of the line.
