The media recently broke the news of a possible comeback for the former world heavyweight boxing champion. Wladimir Klitschko would like to challenge Tyson Fury to one last dance. But the Russian invasion of Ukraine has thrown a pitchfork into the potential gigantic clash.
Tyson Fury was the man who dethroned Wladimir Klitschko
The younger of the brothers, Wladimir Klitschko, had ruled heavyweight boxing practically since the turn of the century and many ranked him among the best boxers in modern history. However, in 2015, he faced the still undefeated Tyson Fury in Düsseldorf, Germany.
During their fight, the Ukrainian couldn’t get his proverbial right hook in and Fury won by unanimous decision of all the scoring judges due to his speed and activity. He rightfully became the heavyweight boxing champion of the world.
The agreed rematch fell through due to adversity
Both men had a contractually agreed rematch, but fate willed otherwise. Fury’s life spiralled out of control after mental health and substance abuse problems. This resulted in “Gypsy King” spending two and a half years out of the ring and losing all his belts.
Klitschko then came face to face with undefeated youngster Anthony Joshua. He succumbed to him by technical KO after 11 rounds at Wembley, ending his illustrious career. In that career he fought a total of 69 fights, 64 of which he won and 53 of which were by knockout.
Over the following years, there were several references to his return between the ropes, however, he himself proclaimed that the only opportunity to return to the ring would be the chance to break George Foreman’s record as the oldest heavyweight champion in boxing history.
Klitschko is not opposed to a return between the ropes, but fate has made other plans this time around
Unfortunately, as we recently informed you, Russia’s incursion into the territory of Ukraine has had a big impact on any plans the Ukrainian boxer may have had. Moreover, heavyweight boxing title holder Tyson Fury announced his retirement exactly one month ago after his spectacular knockout of Whyte.
Wladimir Klitschko appeared in an interview with well-known British journalist and presenter Piers Morgan a week ago. In the candid interview, he weighed in on the subject of his possible comeback.
“Boxing is still my passion,” Klitschko admitted on Piers Morgan Uncensored. “Honestly, I was thinking of challenging Tyson Fury after he announced his retirement, ” he surprised with his answer, even tweeting “one last dance?”.
But he didn’t send the tweet in the end for obvious reasons. “I didn’t because my mind was in a completely different world at that moment,” he said, referring to the Ukraine-Russia crisis. ” It was a dream before the war, ” Klitschko added disappointedly.
“I had a dream to become the oldest heavyweight champion of the world, to break George Foreman’s record,” he recalled of the record held by the famous American boxer. Foreman was 45 years old when he defeated Michael Moorer in 1994 to win the WBA and IBF belts.
the 46-year-old Klitschko would have made an even bigger mark in boxing history. But the war in Ukraine is preventing this spectacular rematch. The question also remains whether Tyson Fury would be willing to return to the ring.
