WTA Berlin
The biggest women’s tennis event of the week will pit Petra Kvitova against Donna Vekic. Both players managed a challenging two matches in a few hours yesterday and did not lose a set. The Czech will be playing her second final of the year, having won the first one against Rybakina at the Masters in Miami. The Croatian has the title from Monterrey, Mexico this year.
Petra Kvitova will be the favourite for the match, she has a positive 4:1 record against Vekic and has already beaten her once this year. The two-time Wimbledon queen will rely on her first serve in Berlin. She has only lost her serve twice so far.
With such statistics on her serve, it is not a big surprise that the Fulnek native can boast a record of 8:0 in sets won here. Her toughest match in the German capital so far was against the world number four Garcia. In yesterday’s quarter-final she beat her 6:4, 7:6.
Now Petra Kvitova has her final match. Will she win it and add a respectable thirty-second WTA title to her collection?

Czech women’s tennis has confirmed its two great positions and the second women’s final of the current week will also feature Czech participation. Barbora Krejcikova will fight for her first triumph on grass against Latvia’s Ostapenko. The winner of the French Open 2021 will try to improve the negative balance brought by their six matches so far.
Ostapenko has walked away victorious four times in their matches, with the Czech rejoicing twice. The Latvian also won their last encounter on the Rome clay this May. However, Barbora Krejcikova is performing better on the grass in Birmingham. She didn’t lose a set and faced only nine break points.
The Latvian is also a French Open winner, having recorded her triumph in 2017. Her results in Birmingham are a demonstration of great fighting spirit. Ostapenko has always won in three sets so far and has spent almost twice as much time on the courts as the Czech.
Let’s add, though, that the 26-year-old Latvian has always stepped up when needed. In three cases she won the first and third set. In the semi-final against Russia’s Potapova, she came closest to elimination. But in the deciding set, she dominated the court from 3:3.
Doubles bonus
The final in Birmingham is scheduled for 14:30. The doubles final will follow. Alongside Ukraine’s Kostyukova, they will battle for the title against the Australian-American pair of Hunter/Parks from one o’clock.
And that’s not all, because the doubles final in Berlin will also have Czech representation. The Siniakova/Vondroušová pair will be there from one o’clock to face the French-Brazilian pair Garcia/Stefaniová.
