A famous name in F1 again? Schumacher would love to return to the grid, but there are a few catches
What’s the status of Mick Schumacher’s return to Formula 1? According to the latest reports, Williams boss James Vowles is considering his involvement, but how realistic this alternative is is the question. However, the current teammate Logan Sargeant hasn’t impressed much, so the American is far from secure in his seat.
Mick Schumacher entered Formula 1 in 2021 when he was signed by the Haas team as part of the Ferrari academy. The son of the famous legend was then driving alongside teammate, Russian driver Nikita Mazepin.
It should be noted, this season Haas was clearly the slowest team of the entire starting field. The results from the 2021 edition were therefore not very representative for Mick. However, he didn’t add any revolutionary numbers in the upcoming season either.
Schumacher didn’t start the season well at all, although he was already within striking distance of points in the first race in Bahrain. It was only later, in the Austrian and British Grand Prix, that he added his first points, and in the second half of the 2022 season he had already beaten teammate Kevin Magnussen several times.
In the end, however, it wasn’t enough to keep his racing seat not only in Haas, but in Formula 1 in general. It should be added, team boss Guenther Steiner recently admitted that he doesn’t like working with rookies, whereupon Haas needs to have experienced drivers.
In hindsight, Schumacher’s involvement with Haas was doomed to failure. At the same time, he is acting as a reserve driver for Mercedes and looking for his chance to return to the F1 grid.
There might be a vacancy, but…
According to the Mirror , Williams boss James Vowles is considering bringing Schumacher in. He seems to be unhappy with the results of the team’s number two Logan Sargeant, who is not guaranteed a race seat at this team at all.
But based on the words of Sky Sports expert Nico Rosberg, Vowles is very much over the numbers. And Schumacher really didn’t ideally have those at Haas.
Mercedes, on the other hand, praises his work as a reserve driver, which the 2016 champion also confirms. And the tests that the 24-year-old Schumacher passed can also be considered successful.
But the problem is that Sargeant is American, which makes it easier for Williams to raise funds, also Logano’s side has always been generous to the team. And it should be added, Logan’s name will continue to sell well in the American majors.
But Mick also promises a lot in terms of marketing. Plus, his uncle Ralf Schumacher is trying his hardest to get him into F1. The American driver’s results may trip him up, as he hasn’t finished in the top 10 once so far this year, while Albon has already picked up 21 points.
It’s an open topic and a lot can still happen before the end of the season. We’ll have to wait for some more official information though.
