A disastrous race for Ferrari! We just didn’t have it in us, says Leclerc of the British GP

Ferrari recorded its worst result of the season so far in the British Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc finished Sunday’s race in ninth place, with his teammate Carlos Sainz rounding out the top ten in points. It was the Monegasque driver who spoke after the race about the disastrous race for Ferrari…

Ninth and tenth after starting from fourth and fifth positions. Ferrari failed to strategically manage the British Grand Prix and recorded its worst result of the season.

It should be noted, had it not been for the retirement of Pierre Gasly (Alpine) at the end of the race, the Italian stable would probably have had only one driver in the top ten in points.

The result of this terrible result for Ferrari is Leclerc’s drop to seventh in the drivers’ championship standings. Sainz is still fifth, but 38 points behind Lewis Hamilton.

As far as the Constructors’ Cup is concerned, the team from Maranello is currently fourth with 157 points. Aston Martin is 24 points behind third and Mercedes 46 points behind second. However, Ferrari still has a huge lead of 98 points over fifth-placed McLaren.

Although Silverstone is not Ferrari’s favourite circuit, the grand prix performance can serve as a warning. Neither Leclerc nor Sainz simply had the necessary race pace, with the latter also comfortably passed by Alex Albon (Williams) in dry conditions.

Moreover, Ferrari did not manage the last race strategically either, when Leclerc was called to the pits by the team after only 18 laps. The hard set of tyres fitted proved ineffective at the slightest on the Italian stable’s cars.

For the second time, the Monegasque driver was stopped by his mechanics when the Safety Car took to the circuit as a result of Kevin Magnussen’s retirement. This time Leclerc changed to medium tyres. However, there was no improvement in race pace.

“We knew that this track would be one of our worst, if only because of the fast corners. That’s one of the weaknesses of our car,” Leclerc said in a post-race interview, which was also quoted by Racing News 365.

“Honestly, when we don’t have the pace, we get into a situation that is very difficult to manage. The timing of the safety car was definitely not the best for us and it was advantageous for many other drivers, but in the end that’s life. We just didn’t have it in us,” he added.
