A disappointed Barcelona missed a shot on target and lost to Bayern again
With the certainty that they will not play the Champions League knockout stage for the second time in a row, the Barcelona players took on Bayern at home. The final confirmation of the Catalan club’s group failure came with Inter Milan’s 4-0 win over Plzeň.
With the certainty that they will not play the Champions League knockout stage for the second time in a row, the Barcelona players took on Bayern at home. The final confirmation of the Catalan club’s group failure came with Inter Milan’s 4:0 win over Plzeň. Wednesday night at Camp Nou then offered another victory for the German champion.
The Blaugranas have not been doing well against the Bavarian side for a long time, the last time they enjoyed a victory in a mutual clash was in May 2015. Bayern Munich dominated the first encounter between these two famous sporting brands in Group C of this year’s prestigious competition with a 2:0 scoreline.
At the end of the opening ten minutes of the duel played from 9pm, the visitors went into the lead in Barcelona. The score was opened by Sadio Mané, who ran at the defence, took a good pass from Serge Gnabry and easily beat goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen. The validity of the goal was then confirmed by VAR.
The spectators in the stadium of almost 100,000 did not enjoy too much football in the subsequent first half. The game was played mainly in the space between the two whitewalls, and there were several hard fouls in the middle of the pitch.
In the 31st minute, however, there was another goal situation, and once again Bayern took care of it. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored from close range from the right side of the penalty area, assisted by Gnabry.
A little while before the break, Julian Nagelsmann’s charges failed to take advantage of an interesting scramble in front of the home goal. After a counter-attack by Xavi’s team, head referee Anthony Taylor then awarded a penalty.
However, the English referee watched Matthijs de Ligt’s tackle on Lewandowski on the monitor and eventually called off the penalty kick. The yellow card originally awarded to the Dutch stopper was therefore also cancelled.
Ten minutes after the break, Bayern scored another goal, but this time it was disallowed. Gnabry was offside, which was revealed by VAR.
Overall, the second act didn’t offer a very attractive performance either. Barça didn’t even get a shot between the three posts of Sven Ulreich’s goal in the whole game. The team from Catalonia eventually lost 0:3, as Benjamin Pavard scored after a corner.
Bayern, who beat their Spanish opponents for the sixth time in a row, will advance to the Champions League semi-finals from first place, with Inter Milan in second place. Last is Viktoria Plzen, who will welcome Barcelona to their home ground next Tuesday. They will face the knockout phase of the Europa League in the spring.
