And it’s official. Novak Djokovic has been granted a medical exemption and will play in the upcoming Australian Open, where he will defend his title from last year. The decision has sparked a rather contradictory reaction.
Novak Djokovic announced on social media on Monday morning that he has been granted a medical exemption and can now travel to Melbourne to compete in the upcoming Australian Open.
The world number one will be defending his title from last year, but until now the Serb’s participation in the tournament has been uncertain. Djokovic is one of the most famous opponents of vaccinations.
The Serbian tennis player has not participated in the ATP Cup, which is also held in Australia.
Exemptions from vaccination are then granted in Australia by two independent panels of government health authorities, not by tennis structures. Furthermore, requests for exemptions should be considered anonymously, i.e. without knowing the name of the applicant.
Djokovic will be fighting for his tenth title in Melbourne. He may also break the record for the most Grand Slam titles, which is now 20, the same as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
According to the ATP’s announcement, 95 tennis players from the world’s top 100 are already inoculated. That is also why it can be expected that the exception for Djokovic will not be perceived very positively. There have already been a lot of negative reactions on social media.
