Not a great start of the day for our tennis players at the Australian Open. Three of them quit after the morning singles matches.
On Monday, Katerina Siniakova was able to leave the Australian Open during the first day of play, and on Tuesday at least three more of our tennis players will join her.
Maria Bouzkova was no match for world number five Elina Svitolina and after a two-hour battle fell 2: 0 in sets that ended 6: 3 and 7: 6.
The match of Barbora Strycova was half an hour shorter, but she was not able to beat Svetlana Kuznetsova, who is just one place ahead of Strycova in the WTA rankings. Kuznetsova needed two sets, both of which she won 6:2.
Kristyna Pliskova was the third to join the party, taking on Heather Watson. In an evenly matched match, there was a two-set tiebreak, but Watson was more successful in both.
During the day, however, the reputation of our women’s tennis was repaired by Karolína Plíšková, Karolína Muchová and Barbora Krejčíková.
