- Home team Germany is out of the championship after the duel with Spain
- Germany’s defeat was celebrated by the English, it all turned into a brawl
- Spain still have a chance for a record fourth title
Friday’s programme for the 17th European Football Championship decided the first semi-finalists. France made it into the top four via Portugal thanks to a penalty shoot-out. Spain beat home Germany in extra time.
Mikel Merino decided the clash between the two most successful countries at the European Championship at the end of the second extra time. Spain had taken the lead through Dani Olmo before Florian Wirtz equalised in the 89th minute.
The great sadness of the Germans was also felt in the streets. A video of the home fans taunting the English fans went viral on social network X. The chanting youths have a word with the Germans, the whole situation eventually turns into a scuffle in which several kicks are thrown.
Spain can win a record fourth title
Interestingly, on the German side, a fan wearing a Spanish jersey tries to calm the situation. But things will calm down soon. The fired-up English probably didn’t realise that they are not yet in the semi-finals and could suffer the same fate as the Germans on Saturday.
Albion will take on the dark horse of the tournament, Switzerland, at 6pm. Gareth Southgate’s charges only got through the eight-final trap thanks to a miraculous goal by Jude Bellingham. Harry Kane finished off the defiant Slovaks in extra time.
In any case, Germany already know that they will not add a record fourth European title to their collection. For the English, a golden success would be their first ever triumph on the European stage. So far they have only one silver and two bronzes.
But the Germans and Spaniards want to catch up with the French in the number of wins at the European Championships. Kylian Mbappé wants this triumph badly.
