  • England have a new national coach
  • The team will be led by German strategist Tuchel
  • He came under fire from critics immediately after the announcement

Interesting developments in English football. The national team there has finally unveiled the name of its new coach. It will be led by German strategist Thomas Tuchel, one of the most respected coaches on the planet, who has led Chelsea, PSG, Bayern Munich and Dortmund.

As a coach, he has won the Champions League, Bundesliga, Club World Cup, Ligue 1, German DFB Pokal, UEFA Super Cup, French Cup and the local League Cup and Super Cup. If he excels at anything, it’s the way he can prepare his teams for tournaments.

That’s why his move from the club scene to the national one seems like the ideal move. And especially to England, who needed a quality and experienced coach like salt. Gareth Southgate didn’t do too badly in terms of results, but he was under fire from critics because of his playing style, poor nominations, conservative moves or lack of courage. Moreover, he didn’t win anything.

In England, however, there was a situation that we might not have expected. Or rather, some wouldn’t have expected it to happen. Yet we know it well ourselves in our own country. Tuchel and the union’s leadership are facing criticism for not getting someone from England to be the new coach.

Interestingly then, while the fans under the announcement post more or less praise the move, the experts would rather see an Englishman with the England national team. In our country, it is rather the case that the experts are calling for a foreign coach and the fans, less and less but still in majority, prefer a domestic coach.

Tuchel, under fire of criticism, has already managed to react

One of the biggest critics is the legendary Gary Neville. “Tuchel is a great coach, he has a proven track record, he has proven he can win big knockout games. From that point of view you can’t criticise the union, they probably have the best coach available in Europe, he meets the criteria. However, I’m not sure it matches the belief in English coaches and the actual growth in the performance of the England team,” he was quoted as saying on Sky Sports.

“We have some of the best clubs in the world in the Premier League and it’s difficult for English coaches to get in. Now even the national team has a coach from abroad. It’s not about Tuchel, but I’m disappointed to have a foreign coach leading the team,” he added.

A man Neville is often at odds with is on the same wavelength. Liverpool legend Jamie Callagher, Manchester United’s biggest rival. He believes that national team football is different to club football precisely because of the competition between nations.

“The national team is simply people from your own country. I know it’s a bit skewed because of players who maybe weren’t born in the country they represent. I understand that some nations have a foreign coach to elevate the level of the system throughout the country. But England came close to winning a major tournament even with Gareth Southgate. It doesn’t seem right to me that we have a foreign coach,” he opined.

But he said it’s not just about England: “I don’t think Italy, Germany or France should have foreign coaches. I also find it strange that Roberto Martinez is leading Portugal. Honestly, I’m not one of the biggest patriots in England. England have got a great coach but I think they should be led by an Englishman.”

And what does Tuchel say? He immediately apologised for having a German passport. Incidentally, he’s only the third non-British coach of the English national team.
