Champions League
Another great tactical performance by Arsenal. The win against PSG was decided by Havertz and Saka
One of the main draws of Tuesday night’s Champions League second round was supposed to be Arsenal’s clash with PSG. But the French side got virtually nothing and took home a two-goal defeat. Arsenal thus managed to atone for their loss to Atalanta.
One of the main draws of Tuesday night’s Champions League second round was supposed to be Arsenal’s clash with PSG. But the French side got virtually nothing and took home a two-goal defeat. Arsenal thus managed to atone for their loss to Atalanta.
- Arsenal confirmed their role as slight favourites
- PSG kept the ball on their feet for much longer, but it didn’t lead to scoring opportunities
- Havertz and Saka were decisive in the win
Arsenal did not have an optimal start to the new Champions League season. The Gunners had only a goalless draw at Atalanta, for which they could still thank goalkeeper David Ray. The Spanish international scored a great double strike.
The reigning French champions, on the other hand, won their first Champions League match against Girona. The only goal of the game was scored by goalkeeper Gazzaniga, who had a crossed ball dropped behind him at the very end of the game.
Coach Mikel Arteta’s charges needed a win in the second round. Accordingly, the opening of the match looked like a much better one for the team from north London.
The first goal was scored at the Emirates Stadium in the 20th minute. A beautiful centre from Leandro Trossard found Kai Havertz in the penalty area, who managed to take advantage of a poor clearance from Gianluigi Donnarumma to open the scoring.
In the 35th minute came the insurance for Arsenal. Bukayo Saka took a direct kick almost from the byline and sent a dangerous centre in front of the visiting team’s goal. The ball was not crossed and eventually flew into the net.
The Ligue 1 leaders did not get any scoring opportunities after the change of sides, as they were opposed by a well-prepared defensive block. On the other hand, Gabriel Martinelli could have increased Arsenal’s lead, but this time the Italian made a great save.
But there was no further goal to be seen. Arsenal thus scored a very important win to move to four points. In the third round they will play Shakhtar Donetsk, the team from the French capital will challenge PSV.
