Atlético fans plan masked action against Vinicius
Calls have emerged on social media from Atletico Madrid fans planning to wear disposable masks during the derby against Real Madrid with the intention of insulting player Vinicius Jr.
In addition, the posts state that Atlético ultras are organising a campaign to encourage other fans to wear masks to hide their identity during racist insults directed at Real players.
Vinicius the target of racism: Mallorca fan given suspended sentence
The fan racially abused the Brazilian player during a match between Real and Mallorca in February 2023. Two weeks later, the same fan also attacked Nigerian player Chukwueze, who was playing for Villarreal at the time. The fan was given a 12-month suspended sentence and a three-year ban from stadiums.
After the court verdict, Real Madrid said in a statement that the convicted man apologised to Vinicius and received training on equality and anti-discrimination. The club stressed that it would continue to fight racism in football.
Other cases of racism in LaLiga targeting Vinicius
In June, a court sentenced three Valencia fans to eight months in prison for racist insults directed at the Madrid striker. The Brazilian player has been the target of racist attacks in various stadiums across the country since his arrival in Spain in 2018.
Vinicius recently called for Spain to lose the right to host the 2030 World Cup if it does not make progress in the fight against racism.
