- Arsenal successfully beat Tottenham three times in a row at their home stadium
- Mikel Arteta took advantage of a deep block that limited the offensive play of Ange Postecoglou
- Gabriel’s second-half header secured the win
Arsenal went into the game against Tottenham with a significantly weakened line-up. Missing were Declan Rice due to a red card and Martin Ødegaard and Riccardo Calafiori due to injuries sustained during the national break.
Arsenal had nine players on the substitutes’ bench, five of whom were under 18. Tottenham, on the other hand, used a full squad, including Rodrigo Bentancur, who is facing a stoppage for an inappropriate joke.
Match flow
The first half belonged to Tottenham, who were more on the ball and struggled to get within striking distance of the Arsenal goal. The Gunners, however, concentrated on defensive play, kept a deep block and minimized dangerous shots from the opponent.
In the first 45 minutes, the referee awarded a total of seven yellow cards, the most in the opening halves of a Premier League match. Tottenham eventually ‘won’ the discipline battle 5:2 on yellow cards.
The decisive moment of the match for Arsenal
The turning point of the match was a corner kick in the 64th minute. Bukayo Saka centred to the head of Gabriel who accurately hit the post. It was the first goal for Gabriel this season, while Saka notched his fourth assist in his first four Premier League games.
The match ended without any pressure from the home side
Arsenal maintained their lead until the end. Dejan Kulusevski had a chance to equalise with a shot from 25 yards, but it just missed the crossbar. Thanks to a solid defensive performance, goalkeeper David Raya was able to celebrate a clean sheet and his birthday in triumph. Tottenham thus lost for the third time in a row to Arsenal at their own stadium.
Coaches’ comments
Mikel Arteta (Arsenal): “We had a few injuries after the national break,” Arteta said at the post-match press conference. “But the team responded well. We showed a lot of maturity and resilience, which I’m happy about,” he continued.
“We knew it would be a tough game – a great atmosphere and a strong opponent. But we also knew we were very dangerous in standard situations. When we had to defend deep, we did well. There is still room for improvement, but this win is huge. I know how our fans feel, so enjoy it thoroughly,” he concluded.
Ange Postecoglou (Tottenham): “I think the game was even throughout. We were in control most of the time and we started well,” Postecoglou told the BBC. “But we failed to take our chances,” he added.
“We lost concentration on that goal. We have tall players who can defend, but for a moment we fell out of rhythm. We were in control for most of the game, we had territorial superiority and more possession, but we couldn’t convert that into goals. And for that we were punished in the end,” added the Tottenham coach.
One more match of the fourth round of the English top competition was played on Sunday, more results and statistics of the Premier League can be found on the official website.
