While the professional golf ecosystem continues to live out its gradual decay in the silence of the grave, behind the scenes, the battle that fans of the game probably crave the most at the moment is being organized. A battle of the best on one course. PGA Tour stars Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler are set to compete in a prestigious year-end battle against the stars of LIV Golf.

Scottie Scheffler is the reigning world number one, an Olympic champion and a recent FedEx Cup winner. Rory McIlroy, on the other hand, is the world’s most consistent player for many years. And it is this duo that is set to challenge two golfers from the rival LIV Golf series in mid-December this year.

They will be Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau, two of the most popular representatives playing LIV Golf, a competition funded by a public Saudi Arabian fund. In addition, DeChambeau is the most recent U.S. Open title holder, which adds to the prestige of this upcoming matchup.

A new era for The Match

What will it actually be about? It’s part of a series called “Capital One’s The Match”, which airs on American television station TNT. It has offered nine similar matches in the past. This time, however, it will be a unique treat that fans have been calling for for a long time.

As Bryan Zuriff, longtime producer of The Match and executive producer of the December event, said, it won’t be just another match in the series. Instead, the plan is to build an entirely new brand. And the battle of the players between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf looks extremely attractive.

The new series, The Match, is intended to resemble the rather extremely popular Ryder Cup, where professional golfers from the European and American continents play against each other once every two years. “We’re leaning towards making it more like the Ryder Cup to develop it into a series that is completely separate from The Match as we know it,” Bryan Zuriff told GolfDigest.

PGA Tour vs. LIV Golf: The format that fans crave

The show’s producers are aware of the current situation. After the creation of the competing LIV Golf series, many players have listened to enticing offers to “play less golf for more money.”

However, the PGA Tour promptly suspended these players, resulting in the current divided world into two camps. Players from both franchises generally only meet at majors anymore. Although the PGA Tour and LIV Golf ended their lawsuits last summer, the announced settlement with the PIF (Saudi Arabia Investment Fund) has still not been reached.

However, many fans want to see the two organizations facing off on the course, which The Match will at least partially offer in December. Whether this will be an isolated event or a regular format is not yet clear. Neither is it clear whether this attractive duel will appear on the screens of any of the Czech broadcasters.
