American football is a tough sport. Although the NFL is doing its best to protect players, it has introduced various rules and even allowed crash helmets to be used by players in training. Injuries cannot be prevented altogether.
So sometimes we see a lot of unpleasant shots with various injuries. This unfortunately happened in the opening game of the second round between the Miami Dolphins and the Buffalo Bills. The team from Florida had a lot to give back to their opponent, losing 13 of the last 15 games between them.
Both the Dolphins and the Bills managed their first games. While Miami sensationally turned around a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, even though star wide receiver Tyreek Hill was knocked down and detained by police before the start of the game, and won 20 to 17.
Buffalo also had a very dramatic first round battle. However, they took down the Arizona Cardinals 34 to 28, with quarterback Josh Allen shining in particular, running for two touchdowns and passing for two more.
The NFL’s second round produced a scary moment early on
The first quarter of the Dolphins vs. Bills game ended 7: 7, but in the second quarter Buffalo started to dominate and added 17 points. However, the third quarter offered a moment that scared not only NFL fans.
Miami needed to score, to get a first down and the offense was not doing well at all. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa took the responsibility on his shoulders and rushed the ball for a first down. He did, only to have his run ended by a hard hit on one of the opposing players.
Only 26 years old, the player went down after the tackle, clearly in convulsions and was subsequently treated on the field for several minutes. His teammates immediately took a knee. Doctors rushed to the pitch. The good news, however, was that Tagovailoa was able to walk away on his own, and he didn’t head to the hospital right away, but waited for his teammates in the locker room.
But it was his injury that ended any hopes of a turnaround. But one thing was important. His health. Fans and experts immediately suspected a concussion, which the star quarterback had suffered at least twice in the past.
In 2023, Tua himself even hinted that he would retire. Repeated concussions have a very negative effect on players’ health. So it is no wonder that now fans and experts alike are saying in no small amount that he should quit his career now, as he is susceptible to this injury.
Will Tagovailoa end his career?
Tua Tagovailoa is now the fifth highest paid quarterback in the NFL. Nobody wants to end their career at 26, but sometimes you can’t help it. We are still waiting for more detailed news on the player’s health and his next move, however, head coach Mike McDaniels mentioned that his charge was in good spirits.
“I talked to him on the field and then in the locker room before he went home. He was in good spirits. When I saw the tackle, I was worried about him. It’s not something you want to be a part of. You hope the worst didn’t happen,” CNN quotes him as saying.
McDaniel then praised his character, adding that he went around the locker room after the game to support his teammates. However, he wouldn’t talk about the future. Like everyone else, he is waiting for more detailed health reports. Moreover, he is not an expert on concussions, so he did not want to comment.
“We will have some talks and then we will proceed as necessary. The last thing on my mind right now is the timeline of when he might return. We have to take one at a time,” he added.
