Few tennis players have been in the spotlight as much as Jannik Sinner over the last week. And it’s not because the Italian is the world number one. His doping case has caused a huge stir. Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev has voiced the concerns of many fans and tennis players.
- Sinner escaped a significant punishment for illegal substances in his body
- Ahead of the US Open, the Italian has sacked two members of his team
- Medvedev expressed concern about access to other players
Sinner got in trouble for his March samples from the Indian Wells tournament. However, the banned substances in his body only caused him to lose points and prize money from the said tournament after the decision of an independent tribunal.
The banned substance was supposed to have entered the tennis player’s body during a massage. The fault was not officially Sinner’s.
The world number one drew consequences from the case a few days ago. The Italian recalled two members of his team just before the start of the US Open.
However, the doubts and aftertaste in the case survive on. Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev named them well.
Does Sinner have the same playing field as the others?
Medvedev is not accusing Sinner of anything. Only the tennis player himself knows how things really were. He and his team, of course.
But he sees one fundamental flaw in the whole affair. All Sinner had to do was say he did nothing wrong. From his point of view, it’s certainly good that he has quickly vindicated himself and is moving on with his career.
“I only hope that every player will get the same treatment,” the Moscow nativeemphasizes his concerns. Only the future will tell. But it is clear that the Sinner case will be an important precedent in similar cases for a long time to come.
Both of the aforementioned tennis players are going on to the US Open. Sinner and Medvedev are in the same quarter of the pavilion. A quarterfinal clash between them is in the cards. Today, they both have a second-round match.
