Ten transfers that could take place in the Premier League before the end of the summer transfer window

The summer transfer window has already brought some big transfers, but a lot can still change before the end of the transfer window on Friday 30th August. Some of football’s biggest stars are still at the centre of transfer action, which could significantly affect more than just the Premier League.

This summer started with a transfer frenzy, kicked off by Kylian Mbappé’s move to Champions League-winning Real Madrid. In the Premier League, Tottenham were not afraid to break their transfer record when they brought in Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth for £65m.

Manchester United decided to almost completely rebuild their defence when they signed players like Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui. Chelsea took another transfer hit when they brought in Pedro Neto from Wolves.

The summer transfer window is fast coming to an end and it is clear that several other significant transfers are still in play. The following ten footballers could change their jersey before the transfer window closes.

Victor Osimhen

Victor Osimhen is one of the main figures in transfer speculation. According to the Mirror, the striker could be another expensive signing for Chelsea. Reportedly, there have been disagreements between Osimhen and his current club SSC Napoli, who finished as high as tenth last season after winning the Scudetto the previous season.

However, the problem is the transfer fee, which is around £100 million. Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are the only clubs that could afford such a player. Although it seems that Chelsea could spend a huge amount again, it all depends on whether they manage to release some players from the squad, such as Romelu Lukaku, who could just head to Naples as a replacement for Osimhen.

Mikel Merino

Despite some delays in transfer negotiations, there is still a real chance that Mikel Merino will move to Arsenal. Mikel Arteta has identified the Spanish midfielder as the ideal partner to Declan Rice in midfield. The main obstacle is the transfer fee, which is reported to be around £30 million.

Arsenal are hoping to bring that price down, especially considering the fact that Merino only has a year left on his contract and is 28 years old. It is also possible that Arsenal will need to raise funds from the sale of players such as Eddie Nketiah and Aaron Ramsdale before Merino can arrive.

Ivan Toney

The departure of England striker Ivan Toney from Brentford was considered almost certain during this transfer window, as Brentford don’t want to risk losing their star player for free next year when his contract expires. Yet no major Premier League club has yet committed to a serious bid.

Toney’s situation may not be resolved until the end of the transfer window, when Manchester United could show interest in his services. Given that Brentford have already rejected a £35 million offer from Saudi Arabian club Al Ahli, United need to outbid that offer, especially given that Rasmus Hojlund will be out at the start of the season and the Red Devils simply need a quality striker.

Marc Guehi

Marc Guehi’s transfer to Newcastle United has turned into a real transfer saga. Newcastle desperately need to strengthen their defence, especially at centre-back, after Sven Botman suffered a serious injury and Fabian Schar was red-carded in the opening game of the season.

Newcastle have already made four bids for Guehi, with the latest being for £65 million including bonuses. Crystal Palace, however, still value their star a little more. If the Magpies manage to offer Crystal Palace more acceptable terms, Guehi could become Eddie Howe’s dream signing.

Eberechi Eze

Guehi’s Crystal Palace teammate, Eberechi Eze, is another player who has been the subject of speculation. Although his transfer seems less likely, he could still change jersey before the transfer window closes. Manchester City and Tottenham have shown interest in the talented midfielder, but no concrete offer has yet emerged.

Jarrad Branthwaite

Jarrad Branthwaite has been one of Manchester United’s main targets for the central defender position, but due to disagreements over the transfer fee, negotiations have not yet moved forward. Everton are reportedly demanding a figure close to £70m, which United have refused to accept. Still, Branthwaite could become an option for United if they fail to get another defender.

Viktor Gyökeres

Although it seems unlikely, Arsenal could still attempt to transfer striker Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting CP, especially if they manage to free up funds by selling Eddie Nketiah or some other player. Gyökeres would be an ideal addition to the Gunners attack.

Federico Chiesa

Coach Thiago Motta doesn’t count on Federico Chiesa at Juventus, so it’s no surprise that several Premier League clubs are showing interest in him. One of the main interested parties is Liverpool, who have already tried to sign the Italian footballer once, but problems with Chiesa’s wage demands could complicate his transfer. Few clubs can afford the £180,000 a week that Chiesa is reportedly demanding. This is also why it is expected that Juventus could let Chiesa go for a sum of around £15-20 million.

Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling was supposed to be a key part of Chelsea’s plans for the new season, but his absence in the first game against Manchester City has sparked speculation of his departure. However, this could be quite a big problem considering he is one of the highest paid players in the league and has three years left on his contract with Chelsea. Perhaps Juventus, who showed interest in him earlier in the summer, could make a bid for him. But that’s assuming Juventus manage to sell Chiesa.

Ilkay Gündogan

Ilkay Gündogan could return to Manchester City after being left out of Barcelona’s squad for the opening game of the season. Gündogan is under contract with Barcelona until 2026, but his move back to City could be a boon for Pep Guardiola’s team, who could undoubtedly use an experienced midfielder.
