VCS: After a long time as outsiders, yet GAM Esports won’t miss out on Worlds again
Vietnam’s top competition also played its playoffs, which also serve as qualifiers for the Worlds. For the first time in a long time, the reigning rulers of the VCS – GAM Esports – did not go into the title fight as the biggest favorite. The battle with its current biggest competitors thus promised great drama.

- GAM Esports went into the series as the underdog
- Five-match drama for GAM
- GAM take the first of two spots for Vietnam in Worlds qualifier
GAM Esports – The bunch around Vietnamese legend Levi may have dominated during the summer split, but to everyone’s amazement, they didn’t finish first after the regular season. A new challenger appeared on the scene, Viking Esports, who assembled a team to dethrone the Vietnamese titan. Teamed around another SOFM legend and with players like Shogun and Biye, the team was hailed by many as the favorite of the league.
It was this mutual battle that would determine who would be the first to capture one of the two spots for Vietnam at Worlds. The region, which is putting its reputation and material together after the biggest betting scandal in LoL history, is also seeing its last appearance in this form.
Next year, Vietnam will join with PCS to form an Asian Super League with Japan, Southeast Asia and Oceania.
The anticipated drama has finally made the fans happy. GAM took the lead, but it was obvious that the new challenger knows how to play and how to negate tactical plans. The Vietnamese Vikings knew how to punish and surprise their opponents. They also managed to find an answer to GAM Esports’ wins in the series.
However, one thing separated the two teams – experience. GAM simply had that in their blood over the years as they shaped the region’s reputation on the international stage. Veterans Kiyaya and Levi, the dedication of the rest of the team, it all fell into place at the most important moment.
GAM outplayed the Vikings 3 to 2 and once again we get to see a likeable Vietnamese side on the biggest stage LoL has to offer.
