Serie A
A phenomenon called Como. Italian project with Fàbregas and Henry back in Serie A
A club you probably haven’t heard much about finds itself in Italy’s top competition after 21 years. This is due, among other things, to a pair of excellent footballers in Cesc Fàbregas and Thierry Henry, who are also minority owners of the club. Moreover, the Spaniard will lead the team from the position of head coach. Which players will he want to stick with?

A tough road to the top
The history of the club from the northern Italian city is not particularly illustrious. In fact, the entire nearly 120-year history is punctuated by recurring episodes of bankruptcy and then the arduous struggle to get back to the top. The same story played out at the beginning of this century. After two difficult seasons in Serie A came financial problems that resulted in bankruptcy and relegation to the 4th league in 2004.
The club relatively recovered from the problems, pulled itself up to the second highest league, but the story repeated itself again. It had to start the 2017/18 season back in the fourth league and was placed up for auction. This was dominated by the Indonesian company Dajrum, which stabilized the club, and from the 2020/21 season the team gradually climbed up to the Italian top competition.
Fàbregas joined Como while still an active player in 2022, but after one season he retired from his professional career and took up youth coaching. However, after the dismissal of coach Moreno Longo, he joined the A-team, where he will be for the following season.
With whom among the elite?
Como finished second in Serie B last season behind Parma, which ensures their direct promotion to the first league. He will be able to rely on an almost unchanged squad, which also retains its biggest pillars, such as Patrick Cutrone.
The AC Milan alumnus scored 14 goals last season and became the clear driving force behind the dream promotion. Still, Como were very active during the summer transfer window and brought in players who are certainly not without glitz.
One of the biggest reinforcements will be sniper Andrea Belotti, who was at Fiorentina or AS Roma last season and netted 6 goals. Also arriving from Spanish side Villareal is versatile Alberto Moreno or 41-year-old goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
Then defender Alberto Dossena transferred from Cagliari for €8 million. Slovakian talent Peter Kováčik is also likely to defend the blue and white colours. He was a guest of Podbrezova last season and scored 6 goals and 10 assists in the Niche League.
However, Coma’s sports department is not stopping on the transfer market and is looking around for other big names. According to the Football Italia website, former Real Madrid stopper Raphaël Varane is expected to arrive for free.
This makes for a very interesting squad in Italy, combining young players with seasoned veterans. It will be very interesting to see how this project will fare back among the elite, both economically and sportingly.
