The tennis tournament is one of the most anticipated parts of the Olympic Games. The organisers have announced the seeds for both singles and doubles. And it was the pair seeding system that came in for criticism soon after it was announced. Which pair will be the number one seed for the Olympic tournament in Paris?

  • The Olympic doubles seedings have been announced
  • The number one team is Italy’s Sinner and Musetti
  • According to many, they do not deserve that position

While the seeding of tennis players for the Olympic singles tournament is based on their respective ATP rankings and is thus not surprising, the doubles is more complicated. This is because the selection of the top-seeded pairs is based on two rankings.

In addition to the seemingly most adequate ranking for doubles, the ranking for singles is also taken into account. And this is where many believe the stumbling block lies.

The composition of the top-seeded pair is quite striking. This is world number one in singles Jannik Sinner together with Lorenzo Musetti.

Critics argue that it is inappropriate for the top-seeded pair to be made up of players who do not even play together. Sinner, for example, has played only five doubles matches this year.

On the other hand, the best players in the world play very little doubles. Still, even in doubles they can definitely sell their qualities.

Other seeded pairs for the Olympic tournament

The number two pair is also the Italians. However, the duo Vavassori/Bolelli are also among the best doubles players in the world according to their results in this discipline.

The same is true for the third seeded pair Krawietz/Puetz. Not far below this German team are the Americans Ram and Krajick. Two more very well proven doubles players.

Fritz and Paul are still classic singles players. These Americans were ranked number four in Paris. It is also worth noting that one of the most expected pairs did not fit among the eight seeded pairs. You would look in vain for the Spanish duo Alcaraz/Nadal among the elite eight of the Olympic tournament.

The tennis duels begin in Paris on Saturday. And the duels for the precious metals in doubles will certainly be more watched than the doubles duels in the regular tournaments. Let’s see how the Italians Sinner and Musetti do.
