For the second time in a row, a tennis player from the Czech Republic became the Wimbledon winner. Last year’s surprising triumph of Markéta Vondroušová was followed by Barbora Krejčíková and thus won her second Grand Slam trophy. How much did she earn with her triumph at the All England Club?
- Krejcikova was in poor form before the tournament started
- The current edition of Wimbledon had the highest ever prize money
- Czech tennis player back in the top ten
Before the start of Wimbledon, the current season was one of the worst for Barbora Krejcikova. She had only seven wins, to which she also added nine losses. However, this was largely due to health complications.
Moreover, she has not been very successful on grass in the past. A year ago, for example, she crashed out in the second round at Wimbledon, where she fell to the talented Russian Mira Andreeva. At 3:6 and 0:4 she abandoned the match.
Markéta Vondroušová surprisingly won the title by beating Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in the final after two sets. This was the first ever Wimbledon winner who was not one of the seeds at the tournament.
This year, Barbora Krejcikova narrowly made it to the top seeds. She was the 31st highest ranked player at the tournament. The last one was home hope Katie Boulter, but she dropped out in the second round.
The twenty-eight year old native of Ivančice made it to the semi-finals at the All England Club with a single set to spare. A slight hesitation came at the beginning of the tournament with Kudermetova, but the Czech Republic’s tennis player won the deciding set 7:5.
One of the biggest surprises was in the semi-finals, where the tournament journey ended for Elena Rybakina, the 2022 champion there. In the final, she then also defeated the tenacious Italian Paolini, who is having her best season.
Krejcikova won her second Grand Slam trophy, the first coming in 2021 at the French Open. With this result, she returned to the top ten of the WTA rankings. She also came significantly closer by participating in the prestigious Tournament of Champions.
How much did Krejcikova earn?
And how much did she actually earn with her triumph at the All England Club? At the 137th Wimbledon, the highest ever endowment was £50 million. The singles winners (including Carlos Alcaraz) earned £2.7 million, which is more than 81 million in Czech crowns.
But of course they still have to tax this amount, in the UK it is 45%. Her earnings will therefore be cut by almost half, but despite this it is more than 40 million crowns. It should be noted, however, that for her will and diligence, she certainly deserves it.
