Reaching the semi-finals of the Euros is something to celebrate. And it doesn’t change the fact that you’re on Centre Court at Wimbledon. But Djokovic’s reaction to England’s celebration of their progress was very swift.

Reaching the semi-finals of the Euros is something to celebrate. And it doesn’t change the fact that you’re on Centre Court at Wimbledon. But Djokovic’s reaction to England’s celebration of their progress was very swift.

  • The match started badly for Djokovic
  • Yet the Serb found the strength to turn it around
  • He was also quick to celebrate England’s progress at the Euros

Djokovic and his match

This match didn’t go well for him. Novak Djokovic surprisingly lost the opening set against Australian Popyrin.

In the second set, however, the match favourite got off to a promising start. But at 4:1 in favour of the world tennis legend, something else momentarily caught the attention of the spectators in London.

At that moment, the English footballers had advanced to the semi-finals of the Euros via penalty kicks over the Swiss. The crowd on Centre Court began to applaud.

Football took precedence over tennis for a moment and Popyrin had to wait with his serve. But both tennis players proved by their reaction that they knew exactly what was going on.

Djokovic signalled a penalty kick and his opponent responded appropriately. The Aussie made a perfect save to deny the Serb’s attempt to the bar.

World number two advances

In this match, Djokovic was among the other favourites to advance to the eighth round of the prestigious Grand Slam. Italy’s Sinner, Spain’s Alcaraz and Germany’s Zverev will not be among the top 16 at the prestigious major.

But Wimbledon has also seen some very unexpected results. No less than five notable names will rate this tournament as botched.

The Serbian tennis player will take on the ambitious Dane Rune in a battle to reach the quarter-finals. With him, Djokovic has an unexpectedly even 3:2 match record.

This match is scheduled for Monday. Let’s hope the rain doesn’t disrupt the London Grand Slam schedule enough to affect this match, which will undoubtedly take place on a court with a retractable roof. But anything can happen, and we wouldn’t expect penalties at these venues either.
