A previously successful German team. Yet Schalke are sinking down a tier and it could well be that this famous club will sink to the third tier. Five years ago, Schalke were still in the Champions League eight-finals. How is that possible?
After relegation from Germany’s elite competition, Schalke should have returned to the elite immediately. But everything is different. The team from North Rhine-Westphalia has seven league titles to its name, but the present is uncertain.
The club from Gelsenkirchen won the weekend’s game against Nuremberg 2-0, but they are still in twelfth place, just four points behind sixteenth-placed Rostock. The latter is in a position that already sends its holder to the barrier for keeping the second league.
Kalas and Kaloc are trying to save themselves
“My team performed very well in the opening act. If I have something to criticize, it is that we should have scored more goals. But Nuremberg showed that they have a lot of fast and skilful players,” coach Karel Geraerts told the club website.
Defender Tomas Kalas also contributed to the important three points. A member of the Czech national team’s wider squad, he moved to Gelsenkirchen after a long stint in England and immediately won a solid place in the starting line-up. He has already managed to score once.
Even worse than Schalke is another famous brand that has a Czech player on its roster. The second to last is Kaiserslautern, where former Baník player Filip Kaloč is a regular in the middle of the field. He will at least play the cup final against the champions Leverkusen.
So the famous brands are not having it easy in the second highest German competition. Schalke can only look back on their time in the Champions League, just as Kaiserslautern can only look back on their last Bundesliga title in 1998.
