It’s not just about winning. Why will Alcaraz be the second Federer?

The decline in his performance in the second part of last year surprised many. But Carlos Alcaraz has a lot more to show. However, according to Eurosport’s expert, his greatness does not lie in the number of triumphs. What does it depend on?
Alcaraz’s victories and defeats
He has been in the spotlight after his successful run through clay tournaments and also after winning the Wimbledon title. But Alcaraz’s results in the latter part of 2023 were no longer dazzling.
His ups and downs this season have also alternated, as illustrated by the Spaniard’s performance at the Masters in March.
After his triumph in Indian Wells, where the current world number three also took on Sinner and Medvedev, came an unexpected defeat by Dimitrov in Miami. There, Alcaraz succumbed to the Bulgarian player 2:6, 4:6 and the dream of the prestigious Sunshine Double came to a cruelly early end.
But tennis is not just about wins and losses. Alcaraz could one day be a huge figure in the white sport. Eurosport expert Mats Wilander compares him to Roger Federer. Why?
The other Federer
Eurosport expert Mats Wilander predicts a glorious future for Alcaraz. And it won’t be an attack on the number of grand slams won or the number of weeks spent at the top of the ATP rankings.
It’s the overall importance to tennis, the expectations that fans place in them, but also the fact that they look forward to matches against them. This is where Wilander sees the importance of both Federer and Alcaraz.
The Spanish tennis player adds variability. His stoppages and attacks on the net add juice to the matches. It is no coincidence that he was directly involved in one of the most attractive exchanges last year.
And at this point, it’s not at all unfortunate that Alcaraz lost his position at the very top of the rankings. This fact may even bring him some relief.
In the just beginning period of clay domination, Alcaraz will be one of the main attractions. The way things are going around Nadal, his younger compatriot may well be alone in the spotlight.
