And both were scored by the home team, who currently lead the league by a beautiful 14 points. Empoli have dropped behind Frosinone to the relegation places.
Inter was a big favourite in the match. Moreover, they were hungry after the national break and when else to score a higher victory than at home against a team that is playing to keep the top competition.
Inter scored the first opportunity in the 6th minute and straight away it was the opening goal. After a centre from Alessandro Bastoni, Federico Dimarco tapped the ball in to open the scoring.
Bastoni himself came close to increasing Inter’s lead. However, after his shot from the left side, visiting goalkeeper Elia Caprile showed his brilliance and cleared the ball off the bar.
In the 27th minute, the visitors could have scored too. Romanian midfielder Razvan Marin fired from distance and Emil Audero in goal had his work cut out to keep the ball out of the net.
We had to wait until the 65th minute for another chance when Benjamin Pavard got a shot off after a ball into the box. He could only show the goalkeeper where to put the shot. But the defender knocked his shot away in time for a corner.
Several substitutions followed and then the San Siro crowd was treated to a second goal. This time it was Alexi Sánchez who was in the lead, clearing into an empty net after a pinpoint pass from Denzel Dumfries.
The match ended with a well-deserved 2-0 win for Inter, who hold a 14-point lead at the top of Serie A. Eight rounds remain in the league and for second-placed AC Milan the gap is virtually unreachable.
Empoli’s motivation for the next matches is well taken care of. After Monday’s defeat, they dropped to 18th place behind Frosinone, who drew with Genoa. But the teams have the same points and identical scores.
