Red for Holes? According to Slavia manager, even Giroud was surprised! In Italy, not even a foul would be whistled
A very harsh red card, which even AC Milan forward Olivier Giroud was surprised to see, affected the match between Slavia and AC Milan. After the Italian team won 3:1, other players were also surprised by the exclusion. In the Apennine Peninsula, they said, the foul would not have been whistled at all.

Another red card for Slavia
Slavia’s journey through this year’s Europa League ended on the art of AC Milan, but also on red cards. Both matches were affected by quick sending offs. In Milan (4: 2), Diouf was sent off in the 26th minute. In the rematch, Holeš was sent off six minutes earlier.
Especially the sending off of Tomáš Holeš aroused a lot of emotions. Calabria missed the ball and the Czech player tried to cover him. When he turned around, he stepped on the Italian’s foot. The unfortunate tackle led to a red card, which was also confirmed by the video referee.
“After the red card it was already decided. When Tomas got it, we wanted to push on, but we couldn’t. I talked to the AC management team and according to them it probably wouldn’t have been a foul in Italy, let alone a red card,” David Zima told Czech TV.
Even the experts didn’t find the sending off harsh
Even the experts in the studio did not like the exclusion of the Slavic captain. Luděk Zelenka mentioned that the referees are guided to a strict standard. Former AC player Marek Jankulovski also shook his head over the exclusion. So did Lukas Provod, who took the captain’s armband from Holes.
“The red card was very harsh for me and it unnecessarily affected the match. The result of the match was unfortunately decided in the 20th minute. I understand the fans were angry,” Provod was sympathetic to the people who poured beer on the visiting Adli and threw cups on the pitch.
Slavia must be even more sorry about the sending off, because until then they had played an even game with the Italian favourite. It could even have scored thanks to Chytil. Of course, the whole affair didn’t leave coach Trpišovský cold either.
“Playing 11-on-11, we were an equal opponent in both games, so we are very disappointed. When VAR was reviewing the red, Olivier Giroud, who was standing next to me, didn’t know what they were reviewing,” the Slavia manager didn’t understand.
Thus, Slavia ended their impressive journey through this year’s Europa League not only because of the quality of their opponents, but also thanks to the strict red cards.
