The impossible has become a reality. LeBron James has broken the long-awaited 40,000 point mark in the regular season. The legendary player reached the milestone during the second quarter and now there is no doubt who is the greatest basketball player of all time.
LeBron James needed just 9 points to break the mark
The Los Angeles Lakers lost to the defending champions Denver Nuggets 114-124 on their home floor, but the home fans were in anticipation of the NBA legend reaching the mark. The arena literally devoured every touch with the ball that LeBron James got to.
Finally, they got to see it at 10:39 in the second quarter. James has crossed the line of immortality. He scored over a defending Michael Porter Jr. and the milestone was broken. LeBron ended up scoring 26 points, 9 assists and 4 rebounds in the game and was his team’s top scorer. He also had a fairly successful shooting night from the field, converting 12 of 20 field goal attempts.
He was followed by Japan’s Rui Hachimura with 23 points. Denver, however, was led by the trio of Jokic, Porter and Murray. They accounted for 84 of their team’s points. Nikola Jokic was traditionally the most visible, scoring 35 points for the Lakers. He added 10 rebounds and 7 assists.
James’ record is unmatched
James already broke the regular season shooting record held by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar a year ago. Now, he has taken it to another level that may remain unsurpassed for a long time. However, just scoring 30,000 points is considered borderline immortal and a ticket to the Hall of Fame. To score another 10,000 points after that? That’s something unimaginable.
LeBron has been in denial the whole time. No one in his years has ever put up numbers like that. In his 21st NBA season, averaging 25 points per game? A unique feat.
James has played his entire career with regular consistency. Hardly anyone can repeat that kind of shooting potential for two decades.
LeBron James said immediately after the milestone that he appreciates the milestone: “To be the first player to do something like that is pretty cool in this league. Just to know the history, the greats that have come through the league, and then to share the floor against some of them tonight is great.”
But aside from the joy, he had one big worry. It bothered him that he achieved his unique record in a game his team lost.
Moreover, the Lakers made their fight for the playoffs more difficult with the defeat. They may be 33-29, but they still don’t have a sure thing. James may have one more season to go and he certainly doesn’t want to be out of contention for a title.
In the playoffs, Lebron is one of the history makers of this game. He always gives more of himself. In the battles where everything is on the line, he dominates.
