Shocking, unbelievable, absolutely anything can happen now. These and other phrases were not only used by Formula One fans on the day Hamilton finally confirmed his departure from Mercedes.
The seven-time world champion and one of the best F1 drivers in history will move to Ferrari at the stroke of 2025. This is an event that has huge implications, and within the world of the queen of motorsport, it is at least the transfer of the decade.
It is all the more shocking to realise that Hamilton and Ferrari have managed to keep the impending transfer a secret from the world. Now even the Mercedes driver has admitted that even his parents didn’t know about it.
“I haven’t spoken to anyone. I told my parents the day it was announced. So nobody knew. I really wanted to do it for myself. In the end, I had to see what would be best for me, ” Hamilton said in a new BBC podcast called “F1: Back at Base‘.
“It happened very quickly. Basically, I’ve known Fred (Fred Vasseur, current Ferrari boss) for a long time. I was really looking forward to the new year, but I didn’t know what my future would be. I didn’t have much time to think and I had to follow my feeling and I decided to take this opportunity,” added the thirty-nine-year-old driver.
Hamilton in Mercedes…
Hamilton has activated the option to terminate the contract he signed last August at Mercedes. Specifically, it was later revealed that Hamilton had a one-year contract at Mercedes with an option for a further 12 months.
Either way, however, the seven-time champion, who has won six championship titles with Mercedes, will not honour that agreement.
Hamilton has won six championships, 82 victories, 148 podiums and 78 pole positions with the German outfit.
