The work is done! Bayern lose their place in the limelight, Leverkusen set a new Bundesliga record

Bayer Leverkusen defeated Mainz 2-1 on Friday in the 23rd round of the Bundesliga. And they took another important step on their way to the title. But among other things, it broke the previous record of the German competition, which it took from its pursuer Bayern Munich.
A dream season – this is how Bayer Leverkusen’s progress in the current German top flight can be interpreted. Admit it, before it started, who tipped Xabi Alonso’s charges as the hottest candidates to win the title?
There probably won’t be many hands raised across all fan communities. Leverkusen, however, may well be having the best season in the club’s history.
Bayer are well on their way to winning the championship. They currently have 61 points and are top of the league table.
And although there are still eleven games to go, the difficulty of which will increase towards the end of the season for various reasons, Leverkusen must clearly be talking about an assault on the first championship title in the club’s history.
Although Bayern still have their Bundesliga round 23 match to play, an eleven-point loss simply cannot look good for Thomas Tuchel and co.
Leverkusen is going for the title and breaking records!
Leverkusen simply dominate the Bundesliga this season. And it’s all made even better by the broken record it took from the current holder and title chaser, Bayern Munich. Bayer has not known the bitterness of defeat even after 33 games played, including ten games from last season.
“I won’t celebrate. I am satisfied with the team’s play, performance and result, but we have to continue in this respect. We are in a good place. But we have to focus on one game at a time,” Xabi Alonso said after the recent game against Heidenheim, in which Leverkusen equalled Bayern’s record of 32 games without a loss.
After the Bundesliga leader’s 2-1 win against Mainz, which was won by the Bundesliga leader after goals from Granit Xhaka and Robert Andrich, Xabi Alonso once again kept his emotions in check.
“I don’t care about records until it happens. But when it happens, I’m really happy. I’m proud of the team,” he said at the post-match press conference.
