A court in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, today sent Spartak Moscow footballer Quincy Promes to prison for six years. The former Oranjes international was proven to be involved in the smuggling of more than 1 350 kilograms of cocaine.
“The cocaine smuggling took place at the end of January 2020. It involved two shipments hidden in a cargo of sea salt bags on a container ship from Brazil. The smugglers managed to take a shipment of 650 kilograms off the deck. Customs officials seized a second batch of more than 712 kilograms,” RTL Nieuws reports.
The Dutch prosecutor’s office wanted as much as nine years in prison for the Twente graduate. Promes did not attend the tribunal because he lives in Moscow. Russia refuses to extradite the star of its football league.
For Promes, this is not his only run-in with the law. He was already sentenced to a year and a half in prison last year for stabbing his cousin at a party. In addition, Promes is expected to pay restitution to the victim. But that case is still on appeal.
Russia refuses to extradite Quincy Promes
“The question is whether Promes will be able to stay in Russia after his career is over. Moreover, if he wants to avoid prison, he cannot travel to the Netherlands for life.
As soon as he sets foot on Dutch soil, he will be arrested immediately. And this includes countries that agree to the extradition of Promes, such as most European countries,” the RTL Nieuws website adds.
Promes is in his fourth year playing for Russian side Spartak Moscow, where he transferred from Ajax Amsterdam. It must be added that he is doing well in Russia. He scored 20 goals in the last season and has six in the current one.
Promes has already played for Spartak between 2014 and 2019 and at that time he was also one of the elite scorers of the Premier League. However, after his transfer to Spanish side Sevilla, he didn’t fare so well. In thirty-three duels, he managed just two goals.
In any case, the Russians stand behind their star and refuse to release him to his Western European homeland. So Promes doesn’t have to worry about jail for now.
