Xabi Alonso? He will stay with us, Leverkusen’s sporting director believes. Bayer launches sale of key star
Bayer Leverkusen defeated Bayern 3-0 in the Bundesliga round 21 match at the weekend and took another very important step in the title race. The father of the success is the current Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso. No wonder there is speculation about his departure to Liverpool. However, the club’s sporting director Simon Rolfes believes he will stay.
Bayer Leverkusen defeated Bayern 3-0 in the 21st round of the Bundesliga at the weekend and took another very important step in the title race. The father of the success is the current Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso. No wonder there is speculation about his departure to Liverpool. However, the club’s sporting director Simon Rolfes believes he will stay.
Leverkusen are having a truly incredible season. After 21 games played, Bayer still lead the German top flight, with 55 points so far.
They have a five-point lead over second-placed Bayern. What is more impressive, however, is that Xabi Alonso’s charges have not known the bitterness of defeat in the current Bundesliga season. They have won seventeen of the aforementioned 21 matches and drawn four times.
But what is behind Leverkusen’s successful campaign so far? This is what their sporting director Simon Rolfes talked about in an interview with German TV Sport1. In any case, the key to everything was the sale of Kai Havertz, or rather his subsequent financial contribution.
“We signed Palacios, Tapsoba, Wirtz and others. Subsequently, it was possible to gradually add to this quality. This year we have players who are absolute top players,” Rolfes told Sport1.
For the record, Havertz left Leverkusen in September 2020 when Chelsea London expressed interest in him. The latter sent €80 million to the German outfit’s coffers for him.
Xabi Alonso will stay, Rolfes believes
The question is what is the future of the current Bayer Leverkusen coach. Xabi Alonso is, after all, quite eagerly linked with an engagement at Anfield Road.
Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp will leave at the end of the season, so the English giant must look elsewhere. But Rolfes believes Xabi Alonso will stay at Leverkusen.
“I am sure he will stay with us. One thing is the contract he has here and another is how well he feels at Leverkusen. He knows he has a very good team and that next year we will have the same good prospects. There will be no earthquakes,” he said.
