Breaking up with his coach after two months and winning the ATP circuit. Will Rune finally reach the title in Montpellier?

It’s always busy around Holger Rune. He recently caught the eye by engaging ex-coach Roger Federer, why are you parting ways with him again after a short stint? He celebrated his 100th victory on the circuit at Montpellier. But at the end of it, he will face the toughest possible competition.

An early breakup

Holger Rune gave his team a major revival last year when, in addition to Boris Becker, he also engaged Federer’s former coach Severin Luthi. After all, the Danish tennis player had gone through a significant performance slump and so changes were to be expected.

Luthi was a part of Rune’s team at this year’s Australian Open and he won’t be appearing elsewhere as the Dane ended his association with him after just two months. The reasoning is quite simple, Luthi’s busy calendar doesn’t provide enough space to work with the ambitious Dane.

But the 20-year-old is definitely back to good performances. At the ATP 250 tournament in Montpellier, France, he achieved his 100th victory on the circuit and will play in the semi-finals.

Rune and the triumph

Quite often in the final stages of tournaments, will the former world number four claim the limelight with a tournament triumph at last? He celebrated his last one last spring and Rune has started to lose a little ground to his generational rival Alcaraz.

Of course, another youngster, Jannik Sinner, is also on the scene, so the motivation to return with a proper result is huge. The competition in the semi-final in Montpellier is of course also.

The highest seeded players are among the last four. Apart from Rune, they are Canadian Auger-Aliassime, who stopped Rune last autumn in Basel, as well as Kazakh Bublik and Croatian Coric.

The Croatian tennis player will be the semi-final opponent of the Dane. Both tennis players dropped out early from the opening Grand Slam of the season, but went on to take a different path. Čorić had an excellent run at the Challenger in Belgium, where he reached the final.

In France, both semi-final opponents have been performing reliably so far. Neither of them has lost a set here so far. Their match is scheduled for Saturday afternoon. By the way, Rune’s journey ended here in the semifinals a year ago.
