The Predators took the first period
Czech forward Dominik Kubalík started for Ottawa after a four-game injury layoff. However, he didn’t make the stats during his nearly seven minutes on the ice.
Nashville took the lead in the 9th minute of the 1st period when Michael McCarron scored on goalie Mads Sogaard. The assist was credited to veteran defenseman Roman Josi.
Eight minutes later, Predators forward Phillip Tomasino made it 2-0. And with one minute left in the period, Yakov Trenin scored to make it a three-goal game. He scored his first goal after a long 17-game goal streak. It was 0:3 for Nashville.
2. third period for Ottawa
Ottawa started the second period with goalie Joonas Korpisal. Sogard scored three goals on 11 shots and the coach was not satisfied with his performance. Predators goalie Juuse Saros capitulated for the first time in the sixth minute. Specifically from the stick of Drake Batherson, with Brady Tkachuk scoring the point on a pass.
Four minutes later, Tim Stützle reduced the gap to one goal. Tkachuk then managed to tie the game at 3-3 by the end of the 2nd period. Ottawa kept the pressure on in the final period. They outshot the Predators 14 to 7. However, both goalies did not score again until the end of the 60th minute.
Giroux made history with a turnover
The game went into overtime, where Ottawa’s veteran forward Claude Giroux turned the game around at 63:36 on a pass from Stützel. He scored his fifth career game-winning goal in which his team was down by at least three goals.
With this feat, he tied the NHL record previously held by the legendary Glenn Anderson. Only two other hockey players have ever scored at least four such goals, Vincent Damphouss and Alexei Kovalev.
Stutzle scored two points in the game and it is his 57th multi-point game for the Senators, breaking Martin Havlat’s record for most multi-point games by a 23-year-old. Ottawa showed in this game that even a three-goal deficit can bring a game to a winning conclusion.
