Attacking the calendar Grand Slam, triumphing at the Tournament of Champions and surpassing one historic milestone after another. This is what characterises season of Novak Djokovic. The next one will be much more challenging, according to the Spanish expert. For what reasons?
Nobody is getting younger, not even Djokovic
Spanish tennis expert Alex Corretja is looking at the next tennis year with high expectations and does not foresee the current hegemon of the ATP tour continuing to clearly dominate. According to the 1998 Tournament of Champions winner, things will be more difficult, to say the least.
The number one reason is the age of the Serbian tennis player. He will celebrate his thirty-seventh birthday in May and what’s the use, nobody is getting younger. Let’s add that already this season the Serbian has been quite sparing with his starts on the circuit.
On the other hand, even Corretja admits that Djokovic is gaining more and more experience. He is maturing like a wine and will definitely fight for every grand slam. But the skills of his biggest rivals are also developing dynamically.
Increasing competition
The Spaniard considers his compatriot Alcaraz, Italian Sinner and Russian Medvedev as the biggest threats to the Belgrade native’s supremacy. He expects the first two in particular to grow like thunder.
“Before, they were tired after three or four matches,” says …about them. They will be stronger in the coming year. And both Alcaraz and Sinner know what it’s like to beat the world number one. It certainly can’t hurt.
Corretja wouldn’t bet on the Serb’s successful assault on the Grand Slam calendar, i.e. winning all the Grand Slam titles next year. “Itwould be surprising,” he said.
In conclusion ..
Among the competitors determined to fight for their place in the sun, we can find other interesting names. However, Sinner and Alcaraz should definitely be at the forefront of this youthful rebellion.
The Italian notched up two wins with Djokovic this year, while Alcaraz snatched Wimbledon triumph from the Serb. Both these stories of intergenerational rivalry will continue next year and the tennis world is rightly curious to see who will pull the longer side of the rope in them.
