After Tuesday’s rather dramatic developments, Wednesday’s Champions League duels await us, with a lot at stake. Who can secure promotion and what do they need to do so?
Tuesday Champions League matches
The situation in Group A is quite dramatic. Bayern Munich, with 12 points, are certain to qualify from first place, but the second place will be a big fight. Copenhagen is second with 4 points, Galatasaray has the same number of points, and last Manchester United has 3 points.
And it is the Red Devils who will face a duel on wild soil in Turkey. One thing is for sure, no team will advance today. Only Manchester United could be out of the game if they lose to Galatasaray. In the last round, Manchester United play Bayern and Copenhagen play Galatasaray.
All three teams could still end up in the Champions League play-offs, the Europa League or drop out altogether. So this group will probably offer the most drama.
But Group B also promises to be an interesting spectacle. Arsenal are first with 9 points, PSV and Lens have 5 points. Last place Sevilla has just 2 points. They can still advance, but they would have to win both games. Neither PSV nor Lens can secure promotion today.
However, the same applies here as in the previous group, Sevilla, PSV and Lens can still end up in both the Champions League play-offs and the Europa League, or drop out altogether.
The certainty of the Spanish teams
In Group C, Real Madrid are assured of qualification, having collected the full number of points. They only need a point against Napoli today to secure first place. Third-placed Braga have three points and if they beat Union, the situation could become even more dramatic. The Italians have seven points and only need to win one of their two games to secure promotion.
As far as promotion is concerned, Group D is already decided. Next up are Real Sociedad and Inter Milan, it remains to be decided in what order. Salzburg have three points, Benfica 0, these teams will still be fighting for at least the Europa League.
