It’s very much alive in Paris. Ahead of today’s crucial Group F match between PSG and Newcastle, the first clash has already taken place between fans in a Paris bar.
Group F offers the most dramatic spectacle ahead of the last two games. All teams can still advance, but Newcastle are in the worst position, with 4 points, they are in last position and if they lose today they will lose their chance to advance. PSG, on the other hand, have a chance to secure promotion if they win and lose to AC Milan.
There is a bit of a tense atmosphere between the two camps after the first game in England, in which Newcastle destroyed PSG 4-1. Thus, the ultras of the Parisians did not exactly welcome The Magpies in their city with open arms.
Newcastle fans were sitting in a bar on Monday night when PSG ultras suddenly ran up and attacked the bar. They threw flares, chairs, some English fans ran out and started fighting.
Apart from chairs and flares, glasses and all sorts of objects flew at the fans. No serious injuries were reported.
The reason for the whole incident was that a similar situation only in reverse is said to have happened at Newcastle before the first game. So it was a rematch on PSG’s part.
The tense atmosphere will surely carry over to Princes Park tonight, where one of the most important games of the season for both teams will heat up from 9pm. Newcastle have a chance for a historic promotion, it would be a great shame for PSG to drop out in the group stage.
But let’s hope the tense atmosphere doesn’t spread to the players. The battle should be played under the rules of football between the two teams and skill should decide who advances to the knockout stage.
