Piqué: Real Madrid’s last Champions League was a miracle. No one remembers it, they were not better in any match

Gerard Piqué has always been one of the most unpopular players among Real Madrid fans during his career at Barcelona. And he has continued his acquired status even after the end of his career.

The 2021/22 edition of the Champions League will clearly be one of his most memorable. For Real Madrid was nothing short of magical.

He was already down 0:2 on aggregate to PSG and turned the score around to 3:2 within 17 minutes. In the quarter-finals, Real were 3:4 down to Chelsea, but equalised with ten minutes to go and went through in extra time.

It was even crazier against Manchester City. The English team won 4:3 at home and was still leading 1:0 at the Bernabéu in the 90th minute, a total of two goals. But then Rodrygo rose from the dead and sent the game into extra time with two goals in two minutes. There, Benzema scored Real’s final goal.

In the final, Real were saved several times by the fabulous Courtois and then Vinícius scored the winner in the second half.

Still, there is someone who wasn’t impressed by the sensational trophy run back then. And that is Gerard Piqué, the former Barcelona stopper.

“It’s more or less the same as always. They’re happy with their luck and they’re going to fight for all the trophies until the end. It’s a team that doesn’t stand out, but it will show itself in the decisive moment of the Champions League,” Piqué said in an interview with RAC 1.

“They have won more in Europe than others, but our way of being and thinking means that if we win, people remember it forever. In Europe, they remember Pep’s Barca as the best team in history,” the former Blaugranas stopper continued.

“Real Madrid’s last Champions League was a miracle and nobody remembers it. They weren’t better in any game and it was just another trophy for them,” Piqué hit back at Real.
