Messi picked his favourite goal of his career. Unsurprisingly, it was against Real Madrid
Lionel Messi has scored a staggering 821 goals in his career. Of these, countless have been magnificent and many have been hugely important. But which one did the Argentine name as his absolute favourite?
Lionel Messi has scored a staggering 821 goals in his career. Of these, countless have been magnificent and many have been hugely important. But which one has the Argentine named as his absolute favourite?
Scoring 821 goals? Unbelievable. Only Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more (862), but Messi is two years younger. 672 have come in a Barcelona jersey, 106 for Argentina, 32 for PSG and 11 for Inter Miami so far.
You would find countless beautiful goals in Messi’s career. Like the one from a direct kick in the Champions League semi-final against Liverpool? Or the solo half-court shot against Getafe that went down in history as the “encara Messi”?
No, the Argentine chose another as his favourite goal. And he combined importance and beauty at the same time, because both aspects are important to him.
“I always say that the special goals are the ones that are the most important. I scored goals in the Champions League final, now in the World Cup final…,” Messi began for the Ballon D’or platform.
“The goal I always remember and love because of what it was and what it meant is the goal against Real Madrid when we beat them 2-0 in the Champions League semi-final at the Bernabéu,” the Argentine added.
The El Clásico of that time was traditionally very heated. Under José Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, it was more of a war.
Several yellow cards, with Pepe seeing a red card in the 61st minute and Real finishing with ten men. The game was finally decided by Messi’s two goals in the 76th and 87th minutes.
