After last season, which was the opening one for coach Erik ten Hag, Manchester United fans had high hopes for the current one. Even English experts saw the Red Devils high. Although the club has again spent a lot of money on new reinforcements, it is already clear that the expectations will definitely not be fulfilled.

Unproductive wingers

Last season, the “blitz” on the right wing was extinguished by the famous Marcus Rashford, who was in great form after the World Cup and thanks to him Manchester United finished in the top four in the Premier League. This season, however, the English winger is floundering and with him the entire attacking game of the team. Above all, much more was expected from the wingers.

Antony is still waiting for his first goal and assist, the same goes for other players. I don’t think we need to talk about Jadon Sancho, he’s played in 3 games this season. The Argentine gem of Dutch coach Erik ten Hag, Alejandro Garnacho, has been more of a substitute joker, in some 500 minutes on the pitch he scored the only goal in the opening game of the Carabao Cup against Crystal Palace.

Tragic defence

Lisandro Martínez picked up a long-term injury at the start of the season and Raphael Varane has also been struggling a lot lately, preventing him from playing. The choice for the stopper duo remains the trio of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans. Although Maguire has had some good games, the choice at stopper is not out of the realm of dreams for coach ten Hag.

In previous years, we could notice that the England international is not capable of running Manchester United’s defence. This fact is once again confirmed this year. But it’s not only about him, Lindelof is not giving miraculous performances either, then we can’t expect it from Evans.

Unfortunately, the fringe midfielders are also a huge problem, as they often burn. We could see that in Wednesday’s cup game against Newcastle, when Diogo Dalot was the main man.

The team has no leader

Bruno Fernandes is the captain of the team, with Casemiro filling in with the armband in his absence. Although at the time when Maguire hopped on with the armband the Portuguese seemed like the ideal choice for the leader position, the current situation suggests that it is not quite ideal.

The players are playing well below their capabilities and it is impossible to say that we have seen any situation on the pitch where Fernandes equals his teammates. When you compare him to Carles Puyol, it’s a bit of a laughable comparison.

Former Manchester United captain and leader Roy Keane didn’t pick a fight with the Portuguese midfielder after the weekend derby. “Fernandes is an excellent footballer but he’s the exact opposite of the player you want as captain, ” the great stormtrooper lashed out.

Manchester United fans are just used to players like Keane, Ferdinand and Vidic, who have constantly motivated the whole team and led by example on the pitch. The current disengaged performances are such a painful sight for a once excellent team.

And we could go on like this for a long time. The question is whether it’s time to change the coach and give the team a boost. On the pitch it seems that the players are completely unmotivated, unless the Dutch coach changes something quickly, it can’t be any other way.
