It’s decided. The betting scandal has another punished. This time it is Newcastle United star and former AC Milan footballer Sandro Tonali. The Italian hopeful will take a break from football for a while.
In the first half of October, the Italian media began to talk about a betting scandal involving more than a dozen Italian footballers. Among them were Nicolo Zaniolo (Aston Villa), Nicolo Fagioli (Juventus) and Sandro Tonali.
While Zaniolo is still awaiting his punishment, Fagioli has known the verdict since 17 October, when he was given a seven-month suspension. Tonali found out what was in store for him on Thursday 26 October.
It is worth mentioning that Tonali is one of the biggest hopes of Italian football. In the AC Milan jersey, he has developed into one of the mainstays of his club and Newcastle United bought him for £55 million, with high hopes for his future.
But now the Italian midfielder faces a big challenge with the English club. The talented footballer is facing a rather long stoppage time and the question is how much it will affect him. Moreover, it may also take a toll on the player’s psyche.
What kind of punishment has Tonali received?
Sandro Tonali has found himself in a difficult situation because of his betting. There was even talk of a three-year suspension for betting on the games he played in. In the end, however, this speculation was not confirmed, fortunately for him.
Still, he will take a break from football for a longer period of time. He can’t play for 10 months. That means that not only is this season over for him, but if his Italy qualifies for the European Championships, which Germany will host in 2024, he can’t go.
However, there has been an agreement that Tonali must undergo eight months of treatment for his gambling addiction.
The Newcastle star admitted to his transgression last week. Thanks to his cooperation in the investigation, he received a lower sentence than the rules, which was confirmed by the head of the Italian federation, Gabriele Gravina.
In addition, to make up for his mistake, Tonali must make 16 public appearances to deter others from falling into the same trap.
