A once-in-a-lifetime goal? The former Czech international stood out for his defensive skills in particular and spent his entire career trying to prevent others from scoring. Exactly eleven years ago, however, it was he who blew the net wide open with an incredible goal.
Martin Jiránek signed his first professional contract with Bohemians, where he spent four seasons. His excellent defensive skills, however, predestined him to continue his football career beyond the Czech Republic.
After his engagement in Liberec, he moved to Italy in 2000, where he won promotion to Serie A in his second season with Reggina. He played 1OO games in four seasons on the Apennine Peninsula before swapping the sun and sea for icy Russia.
Even in Russia, however, he was one of the mainstays of Spartak Moscow and even became the team captain in the 2009/2010 season. Excellent performances did not escape the attention of European big clubs, but Jiranek signed at the age of 31 in Birmingham, England.
With Birmingham, he made it into the starting line-up thanks to an injury to Scott Dann and even won the EFL Cup with the team. But after the club was relegated to a lower league, Jiránek did not sign a contract extension with the club and left for Terek Grozny in Russia.
The tenth league round played on 29 September 2012 then produced a moment that will be indelibly written as one of the most beautiful goals in football history. Jiránek was quick to set up a ball kicked to the halfway line and attempted a shot straight at the goal.
The Czech player’s courage certainly paid off. His long-range shot from the centre circle hit the crossbar.
His goal did not bring points to his team, but it became a memorable moment not only in the memory of the Czech player.
