After the dismissal of Hansi Flick during the national break and the one-match intermezzo of Rudi Völler, the German national football team has a new coach. It will be former Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann. He will lead the national team until the summer Euros.
The president of the German Football Association Bernd Neuendorf, its newly elected sports director Andreas Rettig and Rudi Völler agreed on this during a meeting on Monday.
Nagelsmann, who was sacked from his post at Bayern in March, will be in his role as national team coach for the time being until the summer of 2024, when the Euros are held in Germany.
“We agreed in the management that the national team needs a new impetus after the recent disappointing results,” explained Bernd Neuendorf, the president of the German federation. “For me personally, this was the most difficult decision I have made in office so far,” he added.
“But we need to boost the team with optimism and confidence ahead of the upcoming European Championships at home,” Neuendorf reminded that Germany will host the European Championships next year at the end of June/July.
Nagelsmann, who attracted interest from Chelsea and Tottenham in the summer, is still under contract at Bayern. He needs to terminate his contract with the Bavarian team in order to join the national team.
Nagelsmann is expected to earn about 400,000 euros (roughly 9.8 million kroner) a month with the national team. Bayern will not demand any financial compensation for their former coach.
The 36-year-old will become the youngest coach of the German national team in post-war history. He is expected to lead his new charges for the first time in October in friendlies against the USA and Mexico.
In November, the German footballers have two more preparatory matches scheduled against Austria and Turkey. As the host of the next Euro, they do not have to go through qualification.
