In the United States, the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the season, opened on Monday, and the grand finale of the tennis season in the form of the Women’s Masters Tournament is still being decided. Will we see it in the Czech Republic?

The US Open has opened and fans are enjoying the last grand slam of the season. However, they can also look forward to the upcoming Champions Tournament in the autumn. But this year’s event has yet to be determined.

The WTA is currently deciding who will be handing over the hosting. For tennis enthusiasts in the Czech Republic, iDNES.cz has brought fantastic news. The Czech Republic, specifically the businessman Tomáš Petera, is bidding for it.

But he faces a tough competitor. While Petera would like to bring this year’s edition to Ostrava or Prague, the Arabs want to hold it in the Saudi Arabian city of Riyadh. The decision is to be made in the coming days.

Of course, issues such as the suppression of human rights in Saudi Arabia play a role in the decision, but the Arabs have almost unlimited financial possibilities.

“The WTA has an official offer from me and is considering it very seriously. That’s why we are discussing all possible details. We have the project ready, we are waiting for the final reaction of the association,” Petera told iDNES.cz.

If it succeeds and Petera actually wins the organizing role, it would be one of the biggest sporting events the Czech Republic has ever hosted. This year, the Tournament of Champions is scheduled to take place from October 30 to November 5.

The Tournament of Champions has been played since 1972, hosted by the world’s great metropolises. It is the fifth most watched event of the tennis season.

The fact that several Czech women and the Polish world number one Iga Swiatek will probably take part in the Champions Tournament is a big advantage for the Czech Republic.

Petera already has experience in organizing tennis events. After all, he was rightly praised for the WTA tournament in Ostrava. He had several proposals to put on the table. He said that world stars could return to the Czech Republic in the years to come.

The Czech businessman revealed that he estimated that the state would earn CZK 100 million in taxes alone thanks to the organisation.
