PSG have had to deal with some unpleasant situations this summer, but the French club has largely brought this on themselves. After the scandal involving Kylian Mbappé, the future of the team’s captain is being addressed. The reason? Marquinhos has spoken out specifically on the future of the French star.
He arrived in Paris in the summer of 2013 for a sum in excess of 31 million euros. As a teenager, Marquinhos was one of the most promising stoppers on the planet and was counted on to have a great future. At PSG he soon worked his way into the starting line-up, becoming captain after the end of Thiago Silva.
He’s supposed to be one of the driving forces of his team, which, at least within French football, he is fulfilling. With PSG he managed to win eight league titles, but he is still waiting for the dream trophy for the Champions League winner.
Now it is quite possible that he could fight for it in a completely different team. According to Sports Zone, PSG are considering selling him. There are several reasons, but one in particular prevails.
Kylian Mbappé is in sport with PSG, he will either leave this year for big money anywhere, or he will leave the club for free in a year’s time and won’t play at PSG at all this coming season. And it is on this very issue that Marquinhos has spoken out.
In fact, he said in a press conference that he would like to continue playing with Mbappé. This was not to the liking of the club’s management, which requires the team captain to support the club’s interests a lot more.
To make matters worse, PSG bosses are still upset about Marquinhos’ performance against Real Madrid in the 2021/22 Champions League, when the Brazilian defender’s mistakes ruined his teammates’ chances of progression.
Moreover, since leaving in 2020, he has reportedly been unable to reach his full potential and PSG are therefore considering replacing him with fresh blood.
